YES YOU!
Well...Starting AFTER this blog post that is.
I wanted to share a quick thought to help you retrain your mind and mentally gear yourself for success in your sobriety and LIFE journey.
You see, sometimes we WANT to be distracted. I always like to say that the best way to get a lot of random things done, is to put one really important event in your to-do list for the day. All of a sudden, instead of writing a blog post about procrastination, you look around and the dishes are clean and put away, the cat litter box is tidy, the trash is out, the floors are mopped AND you've alphabetized your ugly Christmas sweaters.
Sometimes we push important things to the last minute to get a rush of excitement for having put in half the work but getting what seems to be twice the results. On the other hand, we also subconsciously use these same methods as a way of Self Sabotage to give ourselves an excuse to not start given tasks because "it's too late to start today, we will do it tomorrow", in another example of charging todays neglect onto the credit card of tomorrow's ambition.
Active procrastination involves deliberately postponing decisions or actions, in order to use the pressure of a near deadline as motivation to get things done. This type of procrastination is sometimes associated with positive outcomes, such as improved academic achievement.
Passive procrastination involves postponing decisions or actions due to an inability to do things in a timely manner. This type of procrastination is associated with a variety of negative outcomes, such as worse performance and increased stress.
How does this tie into sobriety?
In our Livestream and Live chat (every Friday & Sunday at 7pm Eastern) we asked our viewers how many times they've attempted the first day of sobriety and over 50% reported attempting getting sober 10 or more times. Further studies revealed that 25% of people report that the first day of sobriety is the hardest. It's no wonder Las Vegas loves people getting boozed up before making major financial decisions. Not being able to quit, is already part of the problem that favors the house odds.
Believe it or not, I read ALL of the comments (to date) that are left on our videos at www.youtube.com/GettingSoberAgain
I sometimes run into the occasional negative comment about the music, or the lighting, or my hair or even my laugh 😂, but in those, I rarely hear anyone constructively criticizing the message.
"take something with a grain of salt"
regard something as exaggerated; believe only part of something.
What I hear in those messages is someone lost, angry and upset at where they are in their own life and potentially projecting their own frustrations and insecurities. Insecurities learned over a lifetime of responses to guilt, pain, trauma, neglect, gaslighting... Learned toxic behaviors from friends, family and popular culture that have left a lasting impression on how to conduct themselves in the real world, or the the internet (which...is slowly becoming one in the same to some individuals).
I admit that positivity is something that took some time getting used to, and I'm happy to hear and receive many MORE comments, reinforcing the upbeat and welcoming vibe that we are so proudly practicing at "Getting Sober...Again".
One of the things that I learned in my own sobriety is sometimes WE need to get out of our OWN way, to receive the blessings that we continue to ask for. Sometimes, we allow the color of the vehicle distract us from the ride, and take detours because the destinations that we hope to arrive at, don't seem to come as quickly as we'd like.
Blessings are not on demand; you are the genie in your own bottle. If you continue to find reasons to be rubbed the wrong way, you'll continue to waste time collecting reasons WHY something won't work instead of wisely investing your time learning lessons to understand what doesn't work.
“I didn't fail the test, I just found 100 ways to do it wrong.” ― Benjamin Franklin
Whether it be social media, the news, what your friends are doing this weekend, the fear of missing out, or my BEAUTIFUL LAUGH 😂, stop finding reasons to be distracted from your blessings. Step into what the universe has planned for you and be a blessing to not only for yourself, but to those around you.
