It’s about to be a NEW YEAR,
Just in time for you to forget about…
All the things you said you were going to do last year…
But didn’t…again.
The origin of making New Year's resolutions started some 4000 years ago
With the Babylonians,
who reportedly made promises to the gods,
in hopes they'd earn good favor in the coming year.
What did they ask for?
They asked the gods to pay off their bar tabs,
That’s what!**
Sort of...They did however, make sacrifices to get out of debt!
*This year, my sacrifice to the gods is:
to spend less time on social media,
unless I need to check something real quickly…
*With my mouth gaping open scrolling*
*donkey noise*
**
Whatever your sacrifice is gonna be this year…
If I may…give just a little bit of advice,
Don't overwhelm yourself!**
Giving up alcohol by itself is a major lifestyle change.
And 90% of people will be back to drinking within a few short weeks.
Think of it this way:
What if your New Year's resolution LIST was something like,
*Show images of each on the screen
Get a new gym membership,
Sign up for personal training,
To lose 30 lb,
Eat healthier,
Save money,
Less social media,
Read a book a month,
Oh and no sugar,
No carbs,
No smoking,
No coffee,
No alcohol.
No way…you're doing all that.**
I'll be the first one to tell you that you're not gonna succeed on all of that, YET.
Because i love you…**
And,
I'll also humbly remind you that,
I'm just a messenger,
hold your fire!**
But I want you to imagine yourself sitting comfortably in your own home,
surrounded by everything that you know,
Everything that you love,
Everything in its right place,
and decorated just the way that you want it….
And THEN on new years day,
The gods of New Year's resolutions came,
and swept you out of your house,
And took away all the things you knew,
And dropped you into a new version of your house,
Minus all the things that you're addicted to,
ate, drank, entertained and distracted yourself with…**
…You'd probably freak out right?
And that’s what's going to happen to most people,
Come the first day back to work, Monday Jan 3.
You'd probably have no idea where to start,
What to do,
Or How to do it!
It's times like this that we remember: DOING is more important than SAYING.
And that once we've PLANNED,
we must PREPARE, and THEN we can practice.
Yes, practice.
You see, creating such a huge new years resolutions list is terrifying.
In your good intentions of setting yourself up for success,
In reality you’re setting yourself up for failure.
For example, if you go to the gym,
not knowing that on average,
It takes 10 minutes of running on a treadmill,
Not walking.
just to burn off 100 calories…
After the first day back at the gym..
in how long?...
You’ll be sweaty,
Tired, hungry, sore,
your chest is gonna hurt,
and you’re probably gonna grab fast food on the way home because “you earned it”
right?
Even though on your list of resolutions,
It said you were going to eat healthy…
So now begins the self bargaining
and lowering
the bar of expectations,
Coping with poor decisions immediately,
Because “well one cancels out the other, so…i’m just back to even”
Sound familiar?
Rationalizing your resolutions,
like a gambler,
who just lost 3 big bets in a row,
willing to gamble yet another hand
just to hope to get back to even.
Without the right mental preparation,
you’ll be highly shocked and disappointed to know,
that there are 3500 calories in a pound of fat.
If you said that you wanted to lose 20lbs for the new year,
Thats 70,000 calories.
Which if we do the math:
70 minutes of running,
not walking, on the treadmill,
burns 700 calories
(that's 1 whopper, no fry, no drink, 1 hour, 10 minutes TREADMILL)
So the HOUR you just spent at the gym, killing yourself,
All get’s undone in the 5 minutes it takes you to wolf down a burger… because
"you've earned the right to cheat a little"
Just like the gambler who spends a 40 hour work week of money,
and loses it all in just a few short hours in Vegas.
But go ahead, you earned it right? Might as well lose it too.
700 minutes of running
(yes, nearly 12 hours) on the treadmill
burns 7000 calories
or, just 2 lbs of fat. 12 hours.
(thats 10 whoppers + 1 small fry =
12 hours on a treadmill running 5mph with no break)
It takes 7000 total minutes of running on the treadmill to burn 70,000 calories
(the equivalent of 100 whoppers+ 10 small fries)
Aka, 20lbs of body fat.
Calories in, Calories out.
And A lot of us are still carrying the ghosts of burger’s past!**
That’s why it’s so important to MAINTAIN our health,
our weight AND our sobriety.
Because once things get out of hand,
it can feel like,
and might literally take the energy
of a mountain to climb.
Regardless of your diet decisions,
the point is simply to prepare for your new journey.
It’s not just mental preparation,
its physical, spiritual, emotional and maybe financial as well.
In our last episode we told you it's all about perfecting the PROCESS.
What does that mean?
It means to openly and honestly look at your goals,
and make the necessary adjustments along the way.
Work on what you can actually control,
and focus your energy,
on what successes you genuinely believe,
that you can achieve.
AND…. the ones that you ACTUALLY intend to put your energy into.
I still haven't even first book from new years resolutions 10 years ago**
*speaking for dummies*
**Regardless of how many whoppers you’ve eaten,
You only have so much mental, physical and emotional energy per day.
Be mindful of your energy.
and adding 13 new routines to your already unmanageable life,
Is an absolute recipe for disaster.
Perhaps “simplify” should be one of the 3 realistic new year resolution goals for this…. year.
PERFECT TBE PROCESS!
In the new years resolutions list we talked about a minute ago,
There are 14 things on that list.
15 if you include simplify.
Let’s say you start off new years day, hungover…
How much of that list are you going to start on new years day?
2 things?
1 thing?
New years DAY is saturday….
and Sunday is jan 2.
So then for probably 50% of people,
They are going to actually start new years resolutions on Monday jan 3.
A Monday…In January…
Even IF you stay sober on NYE,
Starting too many NEW lifestyle changes,
Will leave you feeling full of anxiety.
Similar to having to walk a VERY tight rope,
of life,
Waiting any minute to fall…
back into the relief,
Of the comfort,
of everything you’ve ever known, loved,
And have ever been addicted to….
Even if it’s going to kill you.
Because unfortunately,
We CAN get used to what we know.
We get used to broken homes,
And abusive relationships.
We get used to toxic people, places and things.
We get used to looking in the mirror and giving up on being better,
Because for so long we have chosen worse.
But For those of you who started your sobriety,
with us,
during sober October,
You will be 90 days sober come Jan 1.
Some of you will be 60 days sober by the new year
Or 30 days sober.
But if you haven’t started yet,
we all know
that the best day to start anything was yesterday,
And the next best day to start is TODAY.
Start NOW, and Prepare for your sobriety journey.
We always say that
people will spend more time PREPARING,
For an afternoon trip to go to the beach,
Than they’ll prepare for sobriety.
Think about the beach example:
You’re going to the beach with your friends or family members….
What are you going to bring?
What are you going to want there WITH you at the beach?
What are you going to wear?
Who all is going to be there?
Am i going underwater?
How long do i have to hold my breath?
Goggles, no goggles….?
What snacks, what drinks? WHERE ARE MY ARM FLOATIES?
gotta make a sandcastle…
Buckets, shovels, chairs, towels, SPF, and…
We probably haven’t cleaned out the cooler since the 4th of july…
Because we’ve….. normalized going to the beach as something fun and innocent,
We forget that we can easily drown.
and that there’re lifeguards in place for when our lives need saving.
But when it comes to sobriety on new years day,
Many people will find themselves out to sea,
Without knowing how to swim,
with no life vest,
And no lifeguard on duty,
making sure to rescue you when you’re too tired to stay afloat.
So I want you to remember this:
I want you to ask yourself this very silly question,
every time you’re not sure
if you’re preparing ENOUGH for your next journey:
Ask yourself:
Do I spend more time preparing to go to the beach?
Or am I spending more time preparing for THIS?”
To generalize what a new years resolution list is,
Is to say that “my life is out of balance,
and I intend to be a better version of myself than i previously was”
So whatever ways that you feel like your life is out of balance,
We both know that there are multiple toxicities
that we could and should do without.
And that if you had to focus on any ONE thing to change this coming year,
I would strongly suggest to put all of your energy into getting sober,
being sober, and staying sober.
Laying this concrete foundation for your future self to walk on,
Is the kind of strength and security that you’re going to need,
To stand up on your own two feet in confidence,
And THEN, take on losing weight,
Feeling great,
And having the energy to GO to the gym,
Waking up earlier,
Going to bed later,
Reinvesting your time into yourself,
Your family,
Your hobbies,
Your passions.
Your work.
By this time next year I want you,
To be able to look in your bank account and see extra money.
I want you,
to be able to treat yourself to a vacation.
To buy yourself a new wardrobe after having lost that 20 pounds.
And give your family the Christmas PRESENTS they deserve,
which includes your PRESENCE
as one of the best gifts,
that you can ever give.
Because either way….it’s going to be a new year WITH or without a new you.
If you’d like see some suggestions
on how to prepare for sobriety?
Check out the description down below:
HOW TO PREPARE FOR SOBRIETY:
-Be honest and open with yourself, your friends, and your family about sobriety.
-Create a new schedule for yourself and fill up your todo list with goals, ambitions, and things that you’ve been putting off for so long.
-Ce patient with yourself and know that this is a slow change that is worth the effort for not just yourself but your friends, family and professional life.
-Change up your routine and scheduling out people, places and things that do not fit your objective of staying sober.
-Don't ask “when can I drink or get high again”. Your drinking buddies will still be there if you ever want to go back. Trust me.
-Get the alcohol out of your house (and that doesn’t mean drinking it until it’s gone). Yes you paid for it. But you’re going to pay an even bigger price of more time, money and years wasted, hating yourself while you keep GETTING wasted. 90% of people aren’t strong enough to dump the bottle. Are you?
-Know what time and where your local AA meetings are. Having a place to go and like minded people to talk to is important.
-Consider signing up for therapy. Therapy is also a journey, but along your sobriety journey, you will certainly have thoughts and feelings that you’ve suppressed for so long that it will be difficult to work them out on your own. (remember: we get used to pain, trauma, and toxicity)
-Take the mental position that you’ve identified something that’s keeping you from being your best self which is alcohol. Rather than feeling like you’re not allowing yourself to have something that you want, which is alcohol.
-Know that sobriety gets easier and remember that if you’re going through hell, keep going.
-And lastly, if you’re worried about withdrawal symptoms, speak with a medical professional. Though people have successfully gone cold turkey, including myself, it isn’t advisable. Tapering off slowly is always recommended. (I used the 10 in 10 method. I was drinking 10+ units of alcohol per day. I intended to quit in 10 days. On day 10 I had 10 drinks. On day 9, I had 9 drinks. 8 drinks on day 8 until I got down to the last day and a single drink. And didn’t go back!)
